Alex Fraser supplies M11 Peninsula Link Freeway

In January 2013 Victoria’s road network saw the completion of the M11, also known as the Peninsula Link. This 27-kilometre freeway was opened by the then Victorian State Premier Ted Baillieu on 19 January, during an official handover ceremony. The road is set to benefit commuters to and from the Mornington Peninsula by cutting travel time between Mt Martha and Carrum Downs in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs by forty minutes.

Alex Fraser played a significant role in the construction of the road, as the supplier of approximately 300,000 tonnes of recycled road base (Class 3 and Class 4 Treated Cement). Vicroads awarded the construction of the freeway to Abigroup, who awarded the tender for primary supply of road base products to Alex Fraser in 2011. A key factor in winning the tender was not only competitive pricing, but also the ability to supply the required volumes within the construction plan.

When asked to comment on the choice for sustainable road base, Abigroup’s project engineer explained: “I had heard about recycled road base previously, but had not had any direct experience with the product. The products were approved to Vicroads specifications and we have been satisfied with its use in this project. We chose Alex Fraser not only for their competitive pricing, but also because they had the ability to provide the volumes we needed. The location of their production facility was a good fit for the supply of these vast amounts and many vehicles required. An additional benefit was the density of the recycled products. Because we required less volume, it meant we required less transport in comparison to quarried materials, and when you need 300,000 tonnes, that can make quite a difference!” according to the Abigroup project engineer.

Commenting on the service provided by Alex Fraser, Abigroup was also happy they chose Alex Fraser: “when we did hit any stumbling blocks, Alex Fraser pulled out all stops to service us, which resulted in great working relationship. I would happily consider using Alex Fraser again.”
