Queensland Premier's Sustainability Award Finalists

Alex Fraser Queensland was named a finalist in the inaugural Queensland Premier's Climatesmart Sustainability Awards earlier this month.

The Queensland entry focused on the company's work on the Clem 7 Tunnel project in Brisbane and the significant carbon benefits achieved through the use of recycled road base material in that major infrastructure development.

This major infrastructure project was Brisbane’s first under river tunnel. It was also the first major infrastructure project in Queensland to use a recycled concrete road base material.

Approximately 100,000 tonnes of specially developed recycled concrete material was used in the tunnel.

Alex Fraser Queensland worked closely with Joint Venture Partners Leightons, Bauderstone and Belfinger Berger to develop a tunnel backfill material that met strict project specifications around quality and timeframes for supply.

Alex Fraser Queensland estimates that the use of recycled material as road base saved over 1,000 tonne of Co2 emissions, diverted from landfill around 100,000 tonnes of waste, and reduced the depletion of natural resources by around 120,000 tonnes.

Using a recycled material which has a lower density also provided significant economic benefits to the Joint Venture Partners,  saving around 725 truck movements or around 40,000 km’s of truck travel and around 20% in material costs.

Alex Fraser Queensland General Manager Rodney Johnson said the Corporate ClimateSmart category was hotly contested by 14 other entrants.

"It was a great achievement to be a finalist, especially in this category where we had such significant competition. The other finalist named was Network 10 and the winner was Cement Australia," he said.

"It is great to see the hard work and effort that the team puts in everyday recognised for the wider benefits it delivers to the community in terms of carbon savings and resource recovery."

The ClimateSmart awards were given to organisations that demonstrated outstanding performance in making sustainable business practices the cornerstone of business development strategy.
