In June 2008 the Alex Fraser Group celebrated the processing of its 20 millionth tonne of recovered Construction and Demolition product.
According to Alex Fraser Group Managing Director Jamie McKellar the milestone took 16 years to achieve but with the rapid expansion of the recycling sector Alex Fraser hopes to process a further 20 million tonne within the next six years.
“It took 16 years to get to 10 million tonnes in 2003, only 5 to get to 20 million tonnes in 2008 and all being well – by 2014 we will achieve our 40 million tonnes milestone!! How good is that,” Mr McKellar said.
“A big part of the success of Alex Fraser’s finished products was the Vic Roads certification in 1992 – which paved the way for real growth.”
As part of the celebration and to explain the benefits of recycled product to government officials Alex Fraser Group also released the findings of a report produced by Melbourne’s RMIT University into the carbon foot print of Alex Fraser Group’s recycled products.
“The really good news from the RMIT report is that every tonne of recycled concrete aggregates we produce makes only 35% of the emissions required to make an equivalent quarry tonne from one of the big primary producers! From the 20 million tones recycled so far – the CO2 greenhouse gas we have saved is the equivalent of parking 29,000 cars for one year,” Mr McKellar said.
In fact, according to the findings of the RMIT study since commencing concrete recycling – our company has recovered enough steel to build almost 4 more Sydney Harbour Bridges – and the volume of 20 million tonnes would fill a silo the size of the MCG playing surface, over 800 metres into the sky. That’s almost three times the height of Eureka Tower – Melbournes tallest and 4 times the height of Riparian plaza in Brisbane.
